To be self sufficient (or striving to be as much as possible) we not only grow the garden and keep livestock.
We also strive to "recycle" as much as possible - not just by sorting our garbage.
When starting up living self sufficient, we also started to consider, what we could use for other purposes, than just filling up the garbage can.
Emty plastic containers from storebought food, marmelade, ice cream etc. is cleaned and used again for food that goes into the freezer, fridge, as lunch boxes (and for leftovers for the son who just moved away from home :-) )
Empty glasses, from ex instant coffee, is cleaned and used for storage of dry stuff as sugar, salt, coconut, etc.
Empty cans is used for baking round bread for canapes, containers for indoor start of plants for the kitchen garden or indoor container gardening.
Empty egg boxes is used as "jiffy pots" for preculture of seeds and seedlings indoors in the miniature greenhouse - you can even make your own miniature greenhouse for a couple of cents, instead of buying the much more expensive ones in the stores, which I'll show you how we do another time.
Of course it takes up some space for storage of all this, so we have made a pantry, where we store a lot of different homemade stuff and containers for later use.
So just let your imagination running and re-use as much as possible for the joy of you, the nature and not the least your wallet. Please dont forget to share your own ideas with us, we love to get inspired!!!
Happy recycling :-)
